Paper grade definitions

COMMENT
Technological advancements in the production of paper grades and the development
in the various end-use sectors continue to blur the edges between the
traditional paper definitions. This development often provokes discussion about
the category under which new projects are placed. For the Partly Mechanical
Coated grade, papers with a furnish of virgin pulp in excess of the traditional
maximum accepted level (10%), the deciding factor is deemed to be the endmarket
into which the paper is sold.
NEWSPRINT
Newsprint is an uncoated paper that is mainly used for printing newspapers. In
the past, it has been made largely from mechanical pulp. But today, an
increasing amount of recovered fibres, mainly from old newspapers (ONP) and old
magazines (OMG), also from goes into the production. The weight of newsprint
falls between 40 g/m2 and 52 g/m2. Newsprint is white or slightly coloured and
is supplied in reels for rotogravure, offset or flexo printing. (Brightness:
Standard Newsprint ≤ ISO 59).
UNCOATED MECHANICAL IMPROVED (UMI)
UMI contains different grades of machine-finished paper of a higher brightness
than is included in Newsprint. The basic furnish is the same as for Newsprint
and the basis weight starts at 40g/m2. The grade is split into two sub-categories
based on brightness – High-Bright (≥ ISO 60, ≤ ISO 71) and Super-Bright (≥ 72).
UNCOATED MECHANICAL OTHERS (UMO)
UMO covers a wide range of publication grades that are not already included in
the other main paper groups listed above. The grade includes directory paper,
thin printing grades and book paper. The basic furnish is the same as for
Newsprint, but the basis weight starts at 28 g/m2.
SC MAGAZINE PAPER
These supercalendered (SC) papers are primarily used for the publication of
consumer magazines, catalogues and advertising material using gravure, offset or
letterpress printing. They are made from mechanical pulp with a large content of
mineral filler. They are usually white. The grade is split into subcategories
based on brightness - (SC-A+ ≥ ISO 72; SC-A ≥ ISO 69, ≤ ISO 71; SC-B ≤ ISO 68).
COATED MECHANICAL REELS (CMR)
CMR is split into two sub-categories – lightweight coated (LWC) and medium
weight coated (MWC). These papers can have either a glossy or matt finish and
are used mostly for catalogues, magazines and advertising material using
rotogravure or offset printing. They are made from a blend of chemical and
mechanical pulp with a content of fillers and are mineral-coated on both sides,
either on- or off-machine. LWC has a basis weight of ≤ 72 g/m2 and anything
above 72 g/m2 is classed as MWC. For an alternative summary of the different
grades, please refer to the table on the last page of this report.

DELIVERY - CAPACITY BALANCE
The statistics published in this report are not meant to represent an operating
rate for the grades concerned. Instead, they are aimed at providing a general
guideline for the combined effects of capacity and delivery trends. These
statistics are calculated using CEPIPRINT member company information and
CEPIPRINT internal estimates.
DELIVERIES
CEPIPRINT DELIVERY statistics are compiled by CEPIPRINT and are based on figures
from member companies along with own estimates.
IMPORTS
Imports to Western Europe have been included in the report, but only for the
Newsprint grade.
CAPACITY
Capacity data have been provided by the European office of the Pulp and Paper
Products Council (PPPC) and are based on both data directly reported by member
companies and estimates. Retroactive revisions of capacity data have been made
by PPPC based on actual production figures reported by most of the members and
on information gathered independently by PPPC.
